Cisco887 Routers Annex M vs Annex A: Know your Annex from your elbow.

Hello Friends,

Here is a shot in the dark on Cisco SOHO or Branch Cisco Routers savings that is easy to see and make.   As well as a bit of easy future proofing on Cisco ADSL Routers with Annex A ( Standard ADSL ) and Annex M ( Faster! ADSL ).   So, it occurred to us that today was an opportunity to see if we can learn something new?   Well I tried…

My questions was:  Can an Annex M ( Fastest speeds before Fibre ) Cisco Router work on the slower Annex A ( Standard ADSL ) lines?   Are they downward compatible, and Auto-Sensing?

Answer: Yes.

Firstly, Cisco800 routers that support Annex M can be identified by a “M” in the product name, for example CISCO887M-K9.   Cisco887M Data Sheet

Secondly,  Annex M routers are able to Auto-Sense between Annex M and Annex A, where Annex M is available.  However, an Annex A router can work only on Annex A.

If a Cisco Router supports both Annexes, you can use the interface command “dsl operating-mode” to force a specific Annex (default is auto mode).

Have a look below and you can refer to this for router specifications:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/800/860-880-890/software/configuration/guide/routconf.html

So in simple terms a Cisco887M-K9 Router will act on Annex A and M lines, and a Cisco877-K9 will act on Annex A.

VHT WiFi – MyMy that’s very high…

Hi Friends,

Just gettin back in the swings of things after Interop…  I keep rediscovering the following about Jet lag. Apparently it is medically referred to as desynchronosis, easy for you to say, right?!  It is a physiological condition which comes from changes to the body’s circadian rhythms resulting from rapid long-distance trans-meridian (east–west or west–east) travel on aircraft. Jet lag is classified as one of the circadian rhythm sleep disorders.  Jet lag can last several days until one is fully adjusted to the new time zone, and a recovery rate of one day per time zone crossed is a suggested guideline. Ouch! The issue of jet lag is especially pronounced for airline pilots, crew, and frequent travelers (ME).    But I digress, and I really just wanted to share a bit about some super duper WiFi IEEE standards that are coming down the pike, it is the 802.11ac.

A video is worth a couple thousand words, so check the be info on VHT or Very High Throughput WiFi out…

There is a wait until the new standard hits the streets in the meantime the current range of

Interop – Las Vegas!

Hello Friends,

I hope and trust everyone is well out there today.  I am getting back in the swing of things from the school holiday period over the past few weeks.   Trying to get over my jet lag, and especially looking forward to Interop in Las Vegas in two weeks time.   Yes, the annual pilgrimage is on once again, where the desert sun and the hot new products melt in to one…   Lots of great things to see, including the below vendors….

http://www.interop.com/lasvegas/

I particularly look forward to the expo every year, my brain is a bit to scrambled after an 8 time zone change to be useful in the conferences…   I tried that with a VOIP technology conference years ago ;-)   Not good, not good.   Anyone else going? And fancy a laugh and cool drink in the sun let me know, and we will add you to the team….   Suitable pictures to follow in later posts.

OK! I'm Excited :-)

I am looking forward to peeking at some Cisco 3900 Series Integrated Services Routers, as well as some Cisco 2900 Series Integrated Services Routers while at the Expo.  Everything else is out of my budget ;-)   unless of course they take pity on my with some free samples :-)

Still catching up, until next time,

Matt

Used Cisco, and the term custom ASIC.

Hi Friends,

As Jimmy Ray asks in the below video intro.. What is cooler than the cafeteria?  Nothing. Well knowledge is pretty cool, and they kick it down here in Networking 101 by explaining to us what is a “Custom ASIC”?   We hear the term banded about, and it is nice to get a fuller explanation on what this means to us.   Grab a brew and enjoy as always.

Used cisco, & refurbished cisco routers and other tasty treats for the network, are available without clogging the arteries ;-)   They sure are great examples of how recycling cisco products make great common, financial, ecological sense to the enlightened members of our IT communities.

Happy viewing and may your network always be up!

Cheers,

Matt
